Hunting Tactical Super Sixty

Some time ago, Hunting Tactical (HuntingTactical.com) introduced the HT60 rifle stock. Makers seem to concentrate on other rifles while the humble but reliable Marlin 60 was a wallflower. This has changed and in a big way. The Hunting Tactical HT60 stock we previously covered (May 2019) is useful for the Marlin 60 and also any Marlin/Glenfield Model 60, 70, or 795 rifle. The existing Marlin 60 or similar rifle may be combined with the HT60 for a modern rifle that is able to deploy rail-mounted lasers or lights.

This makes for many interesting applications. While the Marlin 60 is an inexpensive plinker and small game hunter, it is also a reliable and accurate rifle. Twice during my police service I became aware of instances in which the Marlin 60 .22 was put to use against our criminal element, each time with good effect. The stock is an excellent design, complimented by a good trigger. and has more stretch for different chores. The HT60 stock is manufactured from mil-spec polymer. The modular stock conversion features a telescoping and pivoting stock, a neat trick not possible with the AR-15s. The rake of the pistol grip may be adjusted for maximum fit and comfort. Even the grip system may be adjusted. In short, the rifle will fit all ages and sizes given a user that takes time to adapt the stock to the shooter’s physique. The

result is a means of getting more performance and versatility from the Marlin action. The grip even has built in storage. The stock itself is a kind of ultra-customization of the well-regarded Marlin/Glenfield Model 60 .22 Long Rifle plinker. An adjustable fore-end with Picatinny rail on three sides is provided with the kit for attaching accessories.

While these accessories are good for handling and fit, making the Marlin 60 useful for an adult-size hunting rifle or as a youth model in the same rifle, you still have the original trigger action. Hunting Tactical also offers a trigger spring kit. This consists of four custom springs, the hammer spring, sear spring, disconnect spring, and trigger return spring. These springs will bring the Marlin 60 action to a smooth 3.75 pounds. This is an average improvement across the board of two pounds or more.

The springs are manufactured from ASTM 228 music wire and 302 stainless This is a good set up. steel spring wire. The guarantee is lifetime. Also, for the tubular magazine Marlin 60 rifles, there is a 6061 billet cut and anodized into a trigger guard assembly with a specially adjustable trigger action. Threaded pins allow the shooter to do away with the old-style plastic Marlin 60 trigger guard assembly. The target-grade aluminum flat face trigger is 3/8" wide.

This allows a trained shooter to spread the trigger weight around a larger area. The adjustment screw allows removing almost all pre-travel. While I have respect for the Marlin 60 I never considered it a particularly accurate rifle. The accuracy potential of the Marlin 60 is greatly enhanced by this trigger upgrade with or without the HT60 stock. A note on installing the new trigger springs, they are identical in general appearance to the factory springs.

Be careful not to mix them up with the original factory springs. The big news is the introduction of the Super Sixty rifle. The Super Sixty is claimed to be the industry’s most adjustable rifle. The author has used many rifles and after some thought and research, the claims by Hunting Tactical seem to hold true. The shooter’s body type and shooting style need not adapt to the stock, the stock adapts to the shooter.

Marlin’s Microgroove rifling is inherently accurate and the enhancements by Hunting Tactical aid in practical accuracy potential. The average Marlin 60 rifle exhibits a trigger compression of 5.5 to 7.0 pounds, with most somewhere in this ratio. The Hunting Tactical Super Sixty trigger breaks very clean at just under four pounds on the Lyman Registering Trigger Pull Gauge. The trigger may be adjusted for both pre and post travel. The trigger is free of creep or backlash.

Another enhancement I did not add to my personal HT60 stock and Marlin rifle combination is an enlarged charging/bolt racking handle. This is a great aid for younger and older shooters. The Super Sixty is delivered standard with this racking handle. The bolt stop is very Ruger like, located right in front of the trigger guard. It is quite easy to use quickly.

Specifications The Hunting Tactical Super Sixty weighs 5.11 pounds and has a length of 36.25-39.25" with a sixpoint telescoping stock. Chambered in .22LR, is has a 14-shot tubular magazine with patented closure system. It is autoloading with side ejection and an automatic last-shot bolt hold open. The 19" barrel has Micro-Groove rifling (16 grooves) with a 1:16 twist rate and adjustable open rear sight and ramp front sight. The receiver is grooved with an industry-standard dovetail for optics mounting.

The trigger pull weighs 3.8 pounds in my example and has adjustable pre and post travel with a 3/8" wide, flat faced, 6061 billet anodized trigger for a fantastic looking finish. The trigger guard is made of the same material and there is an improved cross-bolt safety, ergonomic, modern, extended charging handle to reduce bolt drag and allow for ease of operation regardless of sighting system. The improved action allows for a crisp trigger break, lighter trigger pull, and smoother cycling.

The receiver top has a serrated, non-glare finish. The Super Sixty is a very nice looking rifle. Fit and finish cannot be faulted. While many of us tend to build our own rifles, and that is certainly the track I took in putting together my original HT60-stocked Marlin, the Super Sixty has much appeal. I would say that if you have a Marlin or similar rifle already on hand perhaps the stock and trigger parts added to the rifle might add up to more pride of ownership with something you have done by hand.

On the other hand, for those looking for an extraordinary factory rifle the Super Sixty has much to recommend. Accuracy Potential I have not yet fitted the Super Sixty with an optical sight. Most of the firing has been undertaken in order to confirm the rifle’s reliability. Remington .22 Long Rifle, American Eagle .22 Long Rifle, and Winchester M22 loads have been the break in ammunition. All are 40 grain High Velocity loads.

There have been no malfunctions of any type as we approach 1,000 rounds, with the rifle oiled every 200 cartridges and cleaned at the 500 round mark. This is as expected with the proven Marlin 60 action. It wasn’t unusual to fire five shots into an inch at 25 yards. At fifty yards shooting glasses and attention to detail helped the author deliver a number of two-inch groups, along with some smaller. The Hunting Tactical Super Sixty is a rifle worth its price and a super custom rifle we may be proud to own. AG
