NRA Offers Free Disability-Awareness Book

The National Rifle Association’s Disabled Shooting Services Department receives thousands of requests annually for guidance with disability-related hunting and shooting-sports problems. More than a few callers tell of being refused entry into an activity because the local organizers have no idea how to include a disabled sportsman or marksman into their programs.

Much of the inability to accommodate disabled sportsmen has been due to a lack of knowledge of what has been accomplished in the past, both through technological advancements and changes in hunting regulations. In an effort to expand the knowledge on this subject, which is important to the future growth of all hunting and shooting-sports activities, NRA Disabled Shooting Services is offering a free disability-awareness booklet.

The booklet is a collection of articles that were written by Dave Baskin, Manager of NRA Disabled Shooting Services. Over the past 15 years, Baskin has become the nation’s most widely published author on the subject of disabled hunting and shooting-sports activities.

The booklet contains articles on a variety of subjects, including hints for instructors working with disabled students, organizing a wheelchairaccessible sporting-clays event, rifle shooting as a tool in the physical rehabilitation process, and safety tips for disabled hunters.

In addition, there are historical pieces on the early relationship between departments of natural resources and disabled sportsmen as well as highlights of the first NRA Disability Awareness Workshop, which was conducted for the hunter-education instructors of the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department in February 1996. Other articles chronicle the stories of some truly remarkable people who have succeeded in the shooting sports despite overwhelming challenges.
